Musings by The Poet Loriet

Protection of Innocence

teddy bear dreams
and lollipop verses
red rover, red rover
you can't see the hearses
the hate, the violence
the drugs and the guns
they blind and dazzle...
those sugarplum fairies
but soon enough you'll find
reasons to be wary
of the friend waiting
to stab your back
the sirens in the night
the fatal heart attack
those who have
and cannot share
be it love, food, hope,
or even clean air
so play in the pastures
run for the hills
stay away from the streets
and the need for pills
keep your eyes half open
and your innocence protected
turn off the six o'clock news
let the night go undetected.
