Poetry For Everyday People

Mind Ghost

I don't know
of a more complex
chess match,
boil an egg
think of my grandfather
who's been gone for a decade,
the smell outside our apartment in Egypt
the day a man tried to kidnap me,
my parents getting older and
I don't want to face that sun,
the water bill,
waiting on water to boil
for my egg,
IRS, MLS, I don't have money to help
PBS, I peel an orange
smell my fingers,
remember snow,
the first time I heard
Point Blank,
Buddy Guy,
Bernard Allison,
the catering job tonight,
fresh rosemary,

water still not boiling

and for a poet soul
you got to have fire
to mind the ghost,
to stir the juice,
to constantly remember,
constantly feel,
the ghost is always there
for a match,
a reminder.
