How fleeting the summertime the months they pass too quickly and are all but over,
No more lush green fields in which to lie to count the leaves upon the clover,
Posies of wild flowers long discarded by young lovers wilt and are allowed to die,
Soon the migrating birds will take to the skies and to warmer climes will fly,
Autumn arrives in a fanfare of colour, the trees obliging with a resplendent show,
The leaves transformed to numerous shades of brown await the winds to blow,
Hazelnut, acorn and horse chestnut fall to the ground to be gathered for the winter larder,
Whilst an abundance of red berries folk law predicts the winter will be much harder
How long the winter months do stay with rain and sleet and snow,
Best keep inside where it's warm and cosy close to a fireside glow,
With shortened days and lengthened night the coldness seems here to stay,
Eventually the New Year arrives with sun and meagre warmth to brighten up our day.
Slowly the springtime with its forgotten bulbs and corms does gently start to unfold,
Bringing forth the joyousness of life rekindled and old story now retold,
Wild orchids, primroses, bluebells and daffodils all add their hue to the early days of spring,
High in the boughs the migratory birds have returned and a mating song do sing.
The summer months are with us once more with a hazy lazy feel,
To picnic on a grassy riverbank with your truelove so idyllic so surreal
The gathering of the harvest completed at the time of that special moon,
How fleeting the summertime, the months have passed too quickly, gone too soon.
