M's Poetry

Public Hanging

Twenty-five candles on the birthday cake
she burns them out
realizing tonight is the date
and she picks up a knife to cut a piece
sits down in front of the tv
laughs with the comedies
then gets up from the table
looks at the dishes
and thinks no need to do those later.....

She sits down and writes a letter
folds it up on the coffee table
and walks outside to the barn
takes the stairs to the higher level
then reaches for a rope
wraps it around her neck
and pushes the button to release the lever

they found her swinging in the breeze
barn door open
with her horse running around
pretty as you please
and the letter said I am sorry

but the night was gone, the dishes undone
a life was snuffed
when she went off her medicine
and no one noticed
no one checked, no one cared
until her feet was dangling feet off the ground
and her body suspended in the air....
