Sailing down the open road
Things tied to me
Fly out the window
Towards a crisp, blue sky
And a golden sun
Where they are vaporized
In air too new,
And the passing landscape.
Loosening their grip
On the handles I had offered
At first in kindness,
Then in truce
--- But that never works
A black ribbon of asphalt
Soars beneath me
Towards what I left behind
Winding back to the source
Of my unexpected departure
And I am climbing
The scaly back of the beast
Chasing an orange ball of fire
And the fading light
Of today's last act.
Night will bring darkness,
Questions and despair
And the stars will sparkle songs of
The vastness of space
It's a promise to start over again
A fresh, new life
Near the warmth of a distant sun
In my new body
Free of debt and the scars
Of failed romances.
A body that feels more natural
One that comes and goes
With the freedom of my mind
And returns at sundown
Like a good horse.
Something I can ride
Faster than this one could go.
I need one smarter, too
And one that's a lot meaner
Because I'm sick of finishing last
And while I'm at it,
I'll be better looking, too.
And larger too.
Because bigger is always better
When you're bigger
You need more
So you take more.
I don't take enough.
I won't give anymore.
I'll lie, cheat and steal.
And hit them
Before they can hit me
It'll be different then
People will see me as a blank slate
And they'll always have a fair thing to say,
If I wear a permanent smile,
And remember their name
Which I never seem to do
Despite efforts otherwise
But that's something I'll work on,
And learn from all the mistakes I made
That's why I left that place, anyway
Respect arrives and departs
Like the seasons
And the circumstances
That bring opportunity
And my head is clearer now
And my lungs are taking in more air
And there is more light
Inside my body
Tomorrow I won't question.
I'll reach out and explore.
Absorb the new world,
Light years from the old one
Lost within a galaxy of forgotten dreams
Spawned of the cold confines of that place
Dull and vapid,
Devoid of seed,
Dust in the wind.
And now I'm green.
And the sun lives beneath my skin.
And there is light behind my eyes.
By tomorrow I won't recognize myself.
By tomorrow I'll forget…
By tomorrow I won't remember
Who I used to be
