ATHENS
Athens, the Grecian jewel set in the azure blue sea.
If it weren't for men like Pericles,
I wonder today what you would be?
Slaves to the Rulers of Power and Gain,
Greatness and Beauty were lost back then.
Imprisoned within your faceted walls,
you rotted and slowly decayed.
You destroyed your gems like Socrates,
brilliantly inspiring better philosophies.
You were adorned with the Spirit and Gift,
the genius of questioning, the heart to uplift.
Your fate is plain for history to see.
Dilapidated monuments are all that remain.
Well, the lessons of life were played perfectly well
On your Athenian stages depicting waged wars with hell.
Will the man of today learn the lessons you impart
or will they, too, be greedy enough to start
yet another war game of conquer and gain.
As for the peacemakers and makers of rhyme,
Our heartfelt prayers will ascend to His Throne
We will watch with Truth both sweet and sublime.
Truth will win in due time.
And that time is now
