Consequences

They once ruled the planet
Until the cooling of the earth sent them down deep
Towards the warmer molten core
Where they lay still in perfect dreamless sleep
But the ice fields are now melting
Waters rising as glaciers split and crash and slide
Temperatures are slowly rising
Inexorably changing the whole blue planet wide
And the old ones are now stirring
Here a turn here a tremor here a muscular shake
It may take a hundred years
For those old ones to be fully actively awake
They live still in racial memory
Suppressed and sorted and stored but still there
Only to return on occasion
The stuff of mind chilling screaming nightmare
But they are moving
They are shifting
Layers of consciousnesses return
As that ice is faster lifting
Will the old ones live on in peace
With those despoilers of old earth
Will they cry again with horror
After their imminent rebirth
The ancient chronicles record them
Long thought to be passed and dead
Creatures of the elements
Creatures of fear and dread
But they are waking they are waking
Unless the warming stops then surely by and by
The mighty will have arisen
And dragons once more will grace the sky
