 Ghost Mountain

Jason heard the elders talking
their village was in trouble
he had to find his friends
and do it on the double

He found Nick and Alex
sprawled out by a tree
about to take a nap
he shook Alex by the knee

Jason what's the matter?
Nick jumped up and said
I know you've been running
cause boy your face is red

We have to help our village
there's no money and no food
"But we're just little boys!"
Alex said a little rude

But I know we can do it
where there's a will there is a way
we'll find the gold inside Ghost Mountain
we'll do it now, today!

They packed their humble knapsacks
and crossed the village bridge
they'd be there as the sun sets
above the highest ridge

Jason said, "we're almost there
I wonder what we'll find
if indeed there is a ghost
I hope he will be kind"

Nick said, "I hope there's riches
so our families we can help"
all at once the sun winked out
Alex gave a frightened yelp

Jason lit a single torch
"come on don't be afraid"
he swallowed hard walked inside
while silently he prayed

The light cast eerie shadows
frightened they hurried on
up, up, up, they went
finally a light was shown

They came to an archway
words chiseled there in stone
for the first time since they started
they truly felt alone

Then to the side they noticed
skeletons on the ground
many men before had died here
searching for what they now had found

They looked at each other
and Alex shrugged his shoulders
then picked through the riches
where jewels were big as boulders

They filled up their knapsacks
their pockets also full
but it was all so heavy
they had to pull and pull

They made it to the archway
but they couldn't get back through
something barred their way
they pulled till they were blue

Nick exclaimed, there's nothing there!
So what is in our way?
"The Ghost keeps us here!"
they heard Jason say

Alex being the youngest
began to shake and cry
while staring at the bones
he asked, "are we going to die?!"

Jason said, "Don't talk that way
we got in and we'll get out
we just have to understand
what this place is all about!"

Put back all the jewels
we only need this one
then the Ghost appeared
glowing like the sun

Pointing to the words in the stone
he echoed, "GREED BARS THE WAY!"
adding, "your families will be proud
of your lesson learned today."

For greed harbors fools
enemies it does make
the root of all evil
was lying in your wake

Go now from My mountain
take a jewel in each hand
remember your lesson well
now GO, and save your land

But keep my secret guarded
upon your brave return
for the way from my mountain
is a lesson each must learn

Jason said, "we thank you
for the lesson that you give,
and we vow to keep your secret
for as long as we live."

They went down from the mountain
it seemed smaller now somehow
for they had grown in knowledge
and were so much wiser now.

They look back on Ghost Mountain
from their Village that now thrives
where a Ghosts lesson on greed
became a turning point in their lives
