Reflections of My Perceptions

T H E  F A L L  O F  S U M M E R

from these darkening days, the sun retreats
the trees, for now, must also accept defeat
no longer lush and verdant, all but replete
cutting winds, unsheathed, slash with teeth
severing the bond 'tween branch and leaf
fall they do like tears, summer's grief
still their apparent demise is no occasion to weep
for my ears are pleased by their sound under feet
and shortly after earth re-emerges, no longer bleached
so their heroic sacrifice can see life's cycle complete
