I sit atop this mountain
as I have done many times
Every light in the city
can be seen from here
Miles and miles away
I can pinpoint exactly where
Events occured in the past
Are happening this minute
I rode that big golden mare
right up this very steep face
from the very bottom, so fast
she did go, never faultering
stopping where I sit
My eyes wander hesitantly
to the canal
Where my son and others
were pulled from, in death
By those lights, we lived
Had so many fun times
So many friends
In the end, so much pain
Never to return again
The streets of exhileration
on the back of that red Harley
The bar I used to manage
Friends so faithful
Always a good word,
a smile or a friendly hug
The corners where dope deals
are going down, right now
Where lives waste away
to get high, part of a city
where death is a normal daily event
Where no one really cares
The lights hold so many stories
So many heartbreaking
So many filled with happiness
It is late, the lights slowly
go out, one by one
Others come on to welcome
the darkness, that holds
so many secrets, untold..
