A Soldier Mourns His Fallen Comrade
A soldier mourns his fallen comrade
By placing a poppy on his grave,
He stands back and salutes
Tries his best to be brave.
He can't help the tears from flowing
Down his weathered cheeks,
He says a prayer for his friend
The wind stills, as he speaks.
"My friend, my brother
I do miss you so,
Remember when we used to pull pranks
All those years ago?"
"Your family misses you
And my friend, so do I,
I think of the things we did back then
Some memories make me cry."
"I wish I was there to save your life
The day the bombs fell,
But, I stand before your grave
Listening to the tolls of the bells."
"My friend, my brother,
God, now looks after you,
I am sorry, you had to leave
But, there was nothing I could do."
The Veteran wipes his eyes
And backs up from the grave,
Gives another salute to his friend
Thanking him for the life he gave.
