THE PRIZE
Have I done this drawing right?
and please is this writing wrong?
They are both still talking still, I
wait and wait so long.
Tears they run down mummies face
his face like hardened stone
I love my mum, I love my dad
Why then so alone?
Another day, oh, they'll be pleased
from school I run and run
my prize it's clutched in little hand
oh, they will be so glad.
They can put it in a frame and put
it on the wall.
He's not there, just mum was in
look at what I've got, really
put it over there, yes, I've had
an awful day, OK mum. Go to your room
just run off and play. I sit and wait and wait and wait
oh, will he be so pleased?
I have done it right this time not like other days.
nearly dark, the door it shuts, look I have a prize
but they do not notice me, let alone my paper.
I will get into my bed and cry and cry and cry
I awake and it is dark, they call me to their room
I'm trembling and I am cold, I look out at the moon.
Which one is right and which is wrong?
I cannot understand
He gets mad, and mum looks ill, oh no, perhaps she'll die
If she does I'll follow her all the way to heaven.
Thoughts and fears run through my head as I
am only seven.
I GO AWAY, SIT IN THE CHAIR
LISTEN TO MUM CRYING
WHY CAN'T I HELP
A LITTLE MORE
BUT WHAT
DON'T KNOW
KEEP TRYING
