I FOLLOWED
Whether or not, you wanted me to;
by every guiding star, I followed- I followed you.
On highways among the clouds-
down roads to the town where your beauty was born;
for week-ends visits behind convent walls,
when, bless you forever! I converted to poetry;
through the Oak-woods of Poughkeepsie,
where proudly, I kept sight on ‘some-day' dreams;
around squares that told the time,
and twin-towers with the wind, seemed to dance;
over to Millbrook
with its heartbreaking hills, where you housed your hanging plants;
along boulevards of the cloth,
and into boroughs of the highest royalty;
beyond all reason, rhyme or religion, for your love-
for your sweet kisses only.
