Innocence first and foremost
At birth and through His life
That is what I imagine
To be the face of Christ
Softer than an angels touch
Radiant like the sun
The youthful glow of a child
His face when He was young
Scholarly with God’s wisdom
Eager to do His will
With a certain confidence
Yet a humbling appeal
His eyes would seem to call you
Come sit with me awhile
His trust and reassurance
Could be seen in His smile
As He grows into manhood
You might not recognize
The subtle signs of struggle
Begin to fill His eyes
As He delivers sermons
God’s message to convey
Some believe with all their heart
While some cast doubts His way
But still His face is reverent
Strong yet understanding
A look that says I love you
Gripping but not demanding
And last I see agony
A twisted face from pain
A look so horrifying
You turn your head in shame
But in the final moment
A sight your gut does wrench
Hanging on a cross to die
The face of innocence!
