Poetry For Everyday People

No Freedom, No Art

Writing's number one rule is there are none.

there are no rules for getting your words down,
your art, your music, your expression,
your innovation, your heart, your mind's release,
that big pot of life simmering in you,

so I say write drunk, write sober,
write up side down smoking a cigar
playing with yourself drinking a beer,
write sitting in a grave yard, write in
your death bed, write in your room, at
your desk, on a park bench, in jail,
write from happiness, pain, love, hate,
loneliness, fear, visions, illusions,
write your way anywhere you need to be,
write in any way you need, write
because you have to,

the measure of your work or your worth
is how it makes you feel, then how it
makes the reader feel, we're not writing
to drink, we're not drinking to write,
we're writing to survive,

we've got life under our belts, stabbed
in our backs, we're not writing for money
nor fame nor approval other than soul approval,

we're writing it off our chests, out our guts,
we write for temporary air, a chance, a snow flake,

maybe a wink
maybe a smile.
