A Sussex boyhood

Over. (M.P.Bridger)

A cold hand of reason slapped my face,
Stinging wounds from deep inside.
You had finished with the carnival of our dreams.
The bright lights of what we might achieve
Dazzled your searching eyes no more,
All hopefulness gone from them.
Shading your eyes with unpenetrable sunglasses.
Android-like indifference
To my sickening spewings of love's ideal.
You yawned wide that mouth kissed a thousand times
And from it came long hot hisses of boredom
Smothering my dreams with your cigarette smoke.
As you turned and left, I blamed that nicotine cloud
For the redness of my eyes.
