I left Vietnam
Landed in Okinawa
Just me and my duffel bag
1 or 2 days and I would be on my way
But in reflection
I was there for over a week
Promises were given
Next plane out
But day after day
I started to doubt
Would I ever get to go?
Every time I was bounced
By some officer who just arrived
So from the seat I was driven
No place sleep no place for gear
What a mess all strangers
Made some friends till they left
No one but me, it seemed
I had only 3months to go
My enlistment would be over
But I didn't want to stay here
After a week I plead for seat
1st shirt said”he'd get me out of there”
He offered me a drink
He tried shipping me over 6 more years
I took the drink several in fact
He was smiling ear to ear
Thinking he had me full of cheer
I made him promise if I shipped
Only once back in the USA
I boarded a plane that night
Slept and slept nothing could wake me
I was finally going home, sorta
I felt the vibration of wheels going down
No cheering crowds, but we were home!!!
