A Cage To Hold My Dreams

Love Among The Spanners

He was big and coarse and had bodyguards
and pots of money stashed in banks
across several countries.
I wanted his daughter
but he didn't want me anywhere near her.

I knew that if I made him angry,
which the mere mention of my name was enough
to do, sooner or later
I would die from gunshot wounds
or be encased in a concrete block.

But love which isn't strong enough
to risk one's neck for insults the very word.
We who love intensely laugh
at danger.
So I took him on. I let him see that
I wasn't afraid.

Tonight, two men who owed him favours
came to see me.
Writing this is difficult.
I'm in the boot of their car,
with a wide strip of industrial tape
across my mouth.

I found a torch among some spanners,
which gives just enough light
to scribble this down.
I don't know what is going to happen,
But something tells me
we have left the road
and are heading into some woods.
