Poetry For Everyday People

Our Escape

It's a strange feeling
thinking about the words
the wrapped us up at one time,
the smiles that seemed real,
the voice that was, once,
comfort to our ears, as
we let our guards down,
young, new, rockets in space,

ready to follow a hero,
ready to be one,
ready to try anything,

years later though,
scratching our heads,
feeling something deep
about it all, wrestling
our minds, assessing,
regressing,

paid trust,
for experience,
paid heart,
for a people proof vest,

now drinking a cold beer
at the bar, knowing
what we know,

wishing our scars
didn't always feel
so new,

just drinking
that cold beer, thinking
about what we have to,
all the things few will
ever know,

us, our memories,
that night, oh that sweet night,
or that night, damn that night,

the perfect archive,
living within us,
where nothing is ever
erased, lost, nor forgotten,

as we live in real time,
while the replay is on,

at our best
we smile at strangers,
winking, tying the sheets together,
dangling them out the window,

drinking a cold beer,
planing.
