Lonnie Johnson
Robert Johnson

Elvis
from the waist up
shake rattle n' roll

Coltrane relentless

the blues winking
at the world

Carson swinging
the perfect club

I was born in Egypt

soul revolution
half sun half moon
purple blue

Ted Koppel
Night Line

air inside
a fresh
just out
of the oven
pita bread

the thought of
feta cheese
olives
fava beans
olive oil

Laverne & Shirley
Happy Days
Andy Griffith Show
Sanford and Son
The Late Night Movie
cable free
black & white
static
foil
antenna

smell of food
in my mothers kitchen

T Bone Walker
Carl Perkins
Scotty Moore
Billie Holiday
Janis Joplin
Enrico Macias
Eva Cassidy

Billy Joe DuPree
Tony Hill
Randy White

Gypsy's flamenco moon
smell of Christmas
wrapped in snow
topped with cinnamon

two nails and fishing twine
blues in Louisiana
ice tea
and fire water
B B King

cotton fields
shacks
Pyramids

Buddy Guy
digging
Muddy Waters
Jimi Hendrix
digging
Buddy Guy

Eric Clapton & Pete Townsend
in therapy
due to Jimi
they've yet to recover

did I mention Buddy Guy

sweet coconut cake
fried chicken
gumbo
Bob Dylan
biscuits
gizzards and livers
falafels

my oldest friend
David Dodge

Jazz

Pele

Gipsy Kings

in 1989
Buddy Guy
changed my life
he played
right into
my heart
gave me
his guitar pick

(alright, I might have
 elbowed a guy for it?)

but I was healed

back stage
I found a way
to sneak in
and it was:
just me and Buddy

he talked to me smiling
like an old friend

time stopped

for a long moment

and I tucked it careful
in that place
where few precious things
in life
ever get tucked.
