 The Old Couple

The curtain of dusk cascades into sunset
Shimmering in brilliance, then it is gone
A splattered scene no one would soon forget
Night settles in to stay until the breaking dawn....

A couple trudges homeward in the darkness
Stepping so silently they make hardly a sound
The blanket of night tries mightily to suppress
Any shred of light that possibly could be found...

Now this could be a tale of love, of sweet caress
Of unrequited love or of love delicately unfolding
But forty years has given them complete success
Hand in hand, knowing the gift they're holding....

Their age of innocence left behind long ago
Days of exploration far in the long distant past
Still, each and every day love continued to grow
They lived each moment as if it were their last....
