What I thought I knew

What I Thought I Knew

Have you ever had something that you knew so much about
Or at least you thought you knew until you really found out
Well I learned something new just the other day
Once you get hooked on drugs, it's not easy to walk away
Alcohol is a drug that is very addictive too
And there are things about them both that I thought I knew
Like you can be and alcoholic and not drink every single day
It might be something you say you do to chase to stress away
Drugs have the same effect; they can ease things for a while
They can make you feel care free when problems start to pile
I thought addicts and alcoholics were people who were just dumb
But I didn't realize the different life styles they come from
I thought it was just the weak minded not smart enough to choose
But there are lawyers and doctors, and teachers that also use
All this time I thought addiction was just an excuse
Just something they hold on to that they don't want to let loose
What I learned is that it may have been a choice when they began
But in time it becomes something that is actually holding them
And it not something so easy as just to turn and walk away
It's a disease, a serious disease lt's just like cancer or aids
It attacks the mind and it's ability to rationalize or cope
And makes you feel the only way to survive is to do more dope
This is really no cure, it's never ever completely gone
But there are programs to do and steps to take that help to live on
All this time I had it in my mind it's just what they want to do
Not realizing that it could have easily happened to me too
I could have been the one to leave a trail of broken hearts
Busted up relationships and families torn apart
Only by the grace of God,not what I thought I knew
Also by the grace of God others can learn more too
