I
It all began in distant time,
Before the worlds were thought to be;
A solemn promise, a pledge sublime
Deep in the hearts of the Three…
Unknown to the stars above,
Unknown to holy angels too:
The greatest test and act of love
Was His, and only His to do…
II
Deceit and doubt engulfed his heart,
Though still the brightest of them all,
And slowly he began to mull and chart
The schemes and colours of the fall…
And then it flared in open air,
In the highest place he sought to sit;
If he could only see the square
Perhaps the crown may still acquit…
III
To the garden of gardens he came,
An outcast with revenge in his heart,
He changed its name, he changed its frame
And pushed it down on her with art…
The mother of all that were to be,
He knew just how to start this war,
For Adam so in love that he
Forgot his God, forgot his star…
IV
And there in tears was first revealed
A glimpse of how the war will go
Alone, no longer His to shield
‘tan marched them both to death and woe…
And evil spread in every breath
In every thought it placed its seal
And heaven was heavy with regret
But still a few to Him did kneel…
And through these precious few was kept
That promise made so long ago,
Oppressed but true they cried and wept
And waited for the star to glow…
V
Behold to Bethlehem of old
The wise men came who traveled long
And there the mystery yet untold
Was loud proclaimed in wondrous song
‘For unto you is born this day
A Saviour which is Christ the Lord;
Glory to God in the highest way
Peace and goodwill to men be poured'
Wrapped in humble cloth the King
Was met and worshipped by so few
Legions about did satan bring
If they could kill they would have, too…
But helpless though he lay alone
Heavenly hosts kept constant watch
The time will come when He will atone
But until then they were to match…
VI
And how they tried His life to take
Before the hour of sacrifice
He quivered, trembled in the garden wake
And then stood tall to pay the price…
Betrayed, abandoned, denied
Alone He faced the winds of Hell
Forgiving all before He died
A Redeemer was here and all could tell…
All nature went in sudden shock
When Christ expired on the cross
And in despair His faithful flock
Dispersed in fear to mourn their loss…
VII
The Sabbath was the calm they say
Occurs before the coming storm
The Mighty Angel charged for Yahweh
And He came forth in timeless form…
Oh the battle that raged that day
To keep my Saviour in the grave
Oh the victory won that day:
The right to seek the right to save…
VIII
Can any place by grace be reached?
Remember Him on Calvary…
Is the power of darkness impeached?
Remember Him on Calvary…
Age unto age, and time unto time
The wonder of the gift shall be known
To all the winds I give this rhyme
Instead of death He gives a crown…
