 Hungry Eyes

Into my living room comes the appeal of the organizations;
Those that reach out to the poor of this world.
The camera strikes us in our hearts with a vision
Of small children in tattered clothes with hungry eyes.

How can I turn my head away from seeing what is true?
I instantly flip the channel to escape the guilt of wealth.
If I am not forced to look, I can convince myself that I am caring;
Even if I don't respond to the children with hungry eyes.

The small child's dirty face living in utter poverty looks into my home.
The fly on his cheek, with a tearful, expectant smile he pleads;
My heart cries with the knowledge of my blessed families life.
I must not turn my head from the child with the hungry eyes.

Poverty is something that in America we don't really know.
My refrigerator is well stocked and hunger is only a word.
We diet because we have too much, while others die in want.
My eyes are drawn to the child with the hungry eyes.
