High on a hill there's an old oak tree
Where we spent our young days, you and me,
Hiding away from the rest of our peers
Wanting to be alone to share our fears...

Fears of our growing up much too fast
Changes taking place from our secure past,
No longer were we just friendly pals it seems
Our emotions changed as we grew into teens...

Under the old oak, we shared a new dream
Watching oak leaves drift down the stream,
Wondering how far they'd sail like a boat
Before reaching journey's end of their float...

The thought of the future so far away in years
Was enough to bring my young heart to tears,
Knowing that soon you'd be going away
Like the oak leaves leaving with no say...

You carved both our initials before you went away
On that solid old bark that lived forever and a day,
With tears in your voice you whispered,
"I'll RETURN TO YOU!"
As I clung to you, crying,
"I'll ALWAYS FOREVER BE TRUE!...

You served your time to your country in blue
Taking my life's young heart along with you,
Now when I visit you under that old oak tree
I thank God that our fears are finally free!...
