 Wind in My Face

The simple act of putting one foot in front of the other;
At an upbeat pace, as the fast walk rolls into a jog, then a run.
The joy comes into my heart as I run down the roads of my town;
There is a peaceful relaxation in my soul as my body flows along.
I notice my breath and my heart rate aware of my benchmarks;
As I run down the street, I have the wind in my face.

Speed is not as important as it once was as racing no longer interests me;
Not for the honor or the accolades, the challenge or the competition.
None of these former driving forces motivate me to lace up my shoes,
As now only the love of the sensations of the tingling in my body.
Oxygen debt is approached, but now I back off and enjoy the second wind;
As I run down the street, I have the wind in my face.

I no longer put in the long grueling miles each week doing those long slow runs.
No, just for the simple pleasure do I tie up my shoes and run along the river trail,
As I now focus on the things that are happening around me as I travel.
No longer with that narrow focus of time versus pace with its disconnected pain;
Connection is the key to the joy I now have; my body, mind, and soul are now present
As I run down the street, I have the wind in my face.

This was my first winter in four years not training for a marathon.
