 Redefining Fred

A couple of weeks ago I had a head over accident,
Mountain bikes don't like front brakes very much.
My shoulder was jammed, my wrist was damaged;
I am an athlete, at least as defined in my own head.
I refused to yield to better judgment, of course;
As I continued to lift weights, for this is who I am.

Today, the damage finally registered in my head;
While at the Y doing back, biceps, and shoulders.
Coming to the realization that I need to heal, I stopped.
I looked around and wondered why I am hurting myself?
I have been lifting for ten years now, I love the iron;
Standing there, feeling completely empty for a moment.

I wandered aimlessly over to the treadmill, I began to run;
Not a slow jog to burn the excess calories, but truly run.
It had been a while since I felt my legs churning earnestly;
I began to feel my heart rate soar, the sweat burnt my eyes.
Floating into my head were memories from my racing past;
I smiled as I ran, for the time being, I'm redefining Fred.
