 The Vertical Path

I am at a crossroads in my day as I look to my next step;
I have a choice of two paths, vertical or horizontal.
The horizontal path feeds the lusts and desires of my personality;
The lure of this path is tremendous, as it appears so easy and fulfilling.
It promises tranquility and the fullness of my personal power,
As I can scurry after the delights this earth has to offer.
The karma that results from this path is powerful and imposing,
As my lusts clash with other souls in this passion play of life.

The other path before me is the vertical one, as it gently beckons me to come.
Its beauty is obscured by the horizontal's gleaming of temptations;
It looks dark and bland, dreary at best; but it is the path of the soul.
The challenges will be great on this road, as I will come head on with my fears.
There is nothing about this path that appeals to my body or mind.
They see the relinquishing of accumulated powers and pleasures as robbery,
But the soul requires a new dimension within me that needs this space to build.
I must select wisely to enable me to live equipped for the dharma before me.

There is no one path for my life, as each moment the choices change,
As the cross hairs of the two pathway stand before as I select my next step.
With each step there is a new decision to be made, vertical or horizontal;
As step by step, I walk my lifetime to its completion, always having to choose.
The vertical path's secret is revealed with each step upon its slippery surface;
This is the glorious road to enlightenment, our life's true destination.
The unsurpassed beauty unfolds with each footfall on this precarious path.
I pray that each moment, I have the wisdom and strength to choose the vertical path.
