 Labyrinth of Prayer

I was invited by Klinger to her church last night;
I enjoy her openness as well as her spirit, so I went to pray.
Though Christianity and all its trimmings are not usually my bag,
I was touched by the many people reaching out to God's Spirit.
Based on a Middle Age method of aiding the inward journey,
The labyrinth of prayer intrigued me as I walked.

I stopped before entering as a million concerns were on my mind;
Instead I chose to empty myself and allow God to prioritize my heart.
I began my slow walk inward away from the world and its cares;
Seeking the face of God and to hear from His Spirit.
Peace entered my awareness from my first step forward;
The labyrinth of prayer blessed me as I walked.

A quiet came over the people with only the sounds of the music in our ears;
There was a harmonizing of our bodies, minds , and souls as I felt unity last night.
I spent time at the center  of the labyrinth where God's presence was thick;
Then I reversed my steps outward, bringing the peace back into the world.
Stepping out I bowed my head in with profound sense of wonder and awareness;
The labyrinth of prayer had touched me as I walked.

I then entered the partitioned area for meditation and reflection;
I sat and watched the candle flickering from our combined breath.
As I felt a unity and a breaking down of the walls of our differences;
I felt whole for the moment as I became one with the Eternal One.
I left after spending time talking with a truly nice group of believers;
The labyrinth of prayer followed me out the door as I walked into the night.

An old poem written for a friend of mine after visiting her church for this
special prayer service. The labyrinth was a large mat in the floor with a
meandering path twisting and turning into the center, symbolizing a journey
of seeking. Thank you for this experience, Klinger. (Jamie Pharr, pastor at
Covington's First Presbyterian Church)
