 99 Red Balloons
Back in 1984, America brought in Pershing missiles
In response to the Russian SS-20 nuclear rockets.
This flashed throughout Western Europe with protests;
Carlos Karges of Neva pulled this song from his pockets.
His imagination carried him deep across the Berlin Wall;
Seeing the balloons released at a Stones concert in Berlin.
He imagined the Russian's misinterpreting the balloons;
Overreacting to these toys, the last war tragically will begin.
A nuclear exchange is catapulted without a thought;
A final countdown had been launched into the evening sky.
The bursts of the explosives followed by the mushrooms;
We turn to our each of our love's and kiss them goodbye.
This powerhouse song helped bring a sanity to the moment;
With thought, humans can live to see many more afternoons.
A simple trigger of these toys helped defuse the powder keg;
Now they have become a beautiful sight, those 99 red balloons.
