'Sailor's Heart'

Rain falls gently while quietly I sit
With no particular thought in mind,
But an image appears, and is there to behold
Of a ship lost in time, with no where to go.

I see the huge bough rise to the wind
While long ago voices call from below,
They seek direction, yet they know not from where
All they know is their voyage is slow.

I feel a desire to reach out, and touch them
But my hands cannot travel that far,
If they could, they'd hold firmly, upon the ship's wheel
To guide them beyond the north star.

A journey is long when time has no meaning
No destination in mind, not even a feeling,
And the end cannot come for it never was there
So I feel for their plight, I see through their stare.

There once was laughter, excitement, and cheers
As the ship brought them closer to home,
It was heard in the voices which rang out loud
No more would they wander, no more would they roam.

But the image has traveled beyond my mind's eye
To a place uncharted, and dark,
It is there time's forever, and ships sail free
In the sea of a sailor's heart.

~ I love the water. I love ships. Some of
my most pleasurable moments have been spent
on the water. I always found it quiet, serene,
nothing is quite like it. As a young lady
I'd often accompany my father in the summer months
to the local port where he'd purchase the catch of the day
and I'd stand watching the young sailors as they disembarked
their ships. I still think a sailor in his uniform makes a
striking figure. I also would think of their sometimes
perilous plights--and sometimes they didn't come home.
Such was the thought behind the writing of this poem.~
