Do you remember the rag and bone man?
He didn`t have such a thing as a van,
He travelled on foot and pushed his hand cart
Some lucky ones did have a horse drawn cart.
All the kids would listen out for his call
`Toys For Rags` `Toys For Rags` loudly he`d bawl,
He`d stop the cart `Toys For Rags` he`d again sing
Waiting to see what the kids would bring.
In we`d rush and our Mum we would nag
To see if Mum could find an old rag.
If we were lucky we could get a toy
They were all the same for a girl or boy.
The Ragman would say in his sing song voice
`Harmonica or Trumpet is your choice`,
I chose a trumpet much to Mum`s dismay
I blew the `one note` trumpet the whole day.
Do you remember the Rag and Bone Man?
Tax your memory and see if you can,
He is no more, he`s a thing of the past
But my memory of him will always last.
Poor quality paper is what the rags were used for
But it was certainly cheap that`s for sure.
Ground bones were used to make pots of glue
They were a major source of phosphate too.
