Whale Song
Have you ever seen a whale,
the greatest being?
Have you ever seen one spout
or heard one sing?
Have you ever seen one leap,
then whelm the wave?
This creature we once killed
but now want to save.
Out in the vast seas
wherever they're going
they sing of things
beyond our knowing.
Beneath the bright sun
they leap from the sea,
twisting, turning, falling,
oh so wonderfully free!
They've been to places
where nobody goes,
seen tropical sunsets
and swam under ice floes.
Spouting their steamy breaths
beneath God's eye,
they bridge the space
between sea and sky.
Hitting the water after a jump
creates a booming sound,
and their splashing can be seen
for miles around.
Behold, the last Leviathans
of the Earth,
singing and spouting
since time's wondrous birth.
Now that we no longer
do them great harm or wrong,
we can all dream of hearing
the great whale song.
