minnesota summers

in the hot--hot minnesota summer:
as kids we got so hot and it was a bummer:
as a last resort on the hottest days-to cool off we had to jump in the lake-and swim out far:
we wouldnt come out of the water until we saw the night stars:

no matter how hot and humid it got:
the lake cooled us down alot:
as a minnesota kid we spent most of the hot summer in the water:
we were great swimmers just like the otters:

we would scrounge together every penny nichol and dime:
and go down to the dairy queen to get the best ice cream that was so so fine:
a dilly bar was the treasured special treat:
at the dairy queen that we loved to eat:

down by the lakeside there was a rootbeer stand:
it was the best and in the summer high in demand:
an ice cold frosted rootbeer on a hot hot summer day:
it was worth every cent that you had to pay:

but when it really got the hottest and we had to get cool:
riding our bikes to the river was the rule:
as soon as you would jump in the water at the river:
it was so cold that you would shiver:

you could not even stay in the water that long cause it was just so cold:
but as kids we were brave adventurous and bold:
then again we would be riding our bikes back home in the minnesota heat:
couldnt wait to get home to get a popcycle an icy tasty frozen treat:

if we didnt make it to the lake or river to get cool:
we used the garden hose and water balloons to get wet --we were no fool:
no matter how hot it got--we managed to have fun anyway:
on any hot minnesota summer day:
