Let them do it

I walk past a homeless man on the street
Someone should help this poor guy
I think to myself
As I pick up my pace
And try my best to not make eye contact
I see a kettle in front of a store
Pull out a couple bucks from my wallet
And quickly toss them in
Here
Let them do it
I walk away feeling better

I see a story on the news
A storm has ravaged a small town
Hundreds of people are left homeless
There is no food or water to be found
I find a box at a local supermarket
I buy a couple boxes of food
And a blanket
And put them in
Here
Let them do it
Again I walk away feeling better

I opened the paper today
Last night a thirteen-year old boy put a gun to his head
And pulled the trigger
No one paid attention to the poetry he had written
No one saw the signs
I reach into my pocket
There’s another story
A family of five was killed last night
Killed by a drunk driver
Driving in the wrong lane
Without his lights on
The driver was seventeen
I reach into my pocket deeper
But the tears in my eyes bring me to my knees instead
There’s no box this time
There’s nothing in my pocket
That could change this

Yes
There are people wanting to help
But this they can’t do alone
Let them do it
No
This time I can’t
It has to be me

It is so easy to throw a couple of dollars at a problem
And pray it goes away
But to really solve these problems
Someone has to actually do something about it

Next time
Maybe that someone
Will be you
