Enemy at the Table

Enemy at the Table

At a time when any one meal could be my last
In the twinkling of an eye my life becomes the past
Looking back on the things I've said and done
Good deeds and bad deeds, I admit every one
There are those who are closest to me
With hidden motives that I could not see
Some may wish me nothing but good
But if not it would certainly be understood
I stand self-condemned no room to judge
No room to point fingers or strength to hold a grudge
My feet soiled from daily walking in sin
This traveler bid me to come and walk with him
He taught me how to be humble and serve
And shared with me a grace that I didn't deserve
He gave me a place at the supper table, just right of him
And said let me wash your feet before we begin
This changed my life forever; I'm no longer the same
I am free from all guilt, bitterness, and shame
I no longer have to suffer sickness and pain
Because of a wonder Man with a wonderful name
He is the Son the God, the only begotten
Through Him my treachery has been forgotten
I was an enemy of God fighting tooth and nail
Waging a war in which I would never prevail
Too blind to realize it, to puffed with pride
Instead of destroying me He sat me by His side
I think about Judas and a search to find
What thoughts tortured his feeble mind?
We have enemies at our tables that we know
There are hidden agendas that will never show
The example of Jesus was to pull them close
Show grace and mercy and be a wonderful host
Extend the love once extended to you
Forgive them for what they don't know they do
When I think about my very own life of sin
And I know I'll never go there again
The one who bled and died to set me free
Is alive and well and now living in me
