Rules are Rules

Rules are Rules
Hebrews chapter 12 right there is verse one
Describes the Christian run and how to run
Laying the weight and the sin aside
Using only the equipment the rules provide
The sin that ensnares us so easily
Appeals to our since of conformity
Like laying in the bed on a cold day
Safe and warm chasing the chill away
That sin feels like the gear the runners wear
So surrounded in comfort likes it not there
But the wrong gear can cost seconds at a time
And is as costly a crossing the painted line
That's where the rules of the race we're trying to win
Or the conditions of the race that we are running in
The course has been laid and the rules explained
The runners my differ but the track is the same
Run the race, Paul says, to receive the crown
Without the weight of sin holding you down
Stay the course says he; endure to the end
No matter who crosses first; you finish, you win
Check the rule book learn how to run
And obey every word until the race is done
The rule book is the bible, it's the only one
Commanded by the Father, endorsed by the Son
The Holy Spirit bears witness, every word is true
Agree with it or not; the rules are the rules
Some like to pretend that they don't know
But just because they pretend doesn't make it so
Some don't believe in the race or reward
But unbelief breeds a penalty you cannot afford
That's why the race is not given to the swift
Because it takes time to shed what we're running with
This race is given to those who endure
Who's hearts are tender, who's motives are pure
They run by the rules, they run without weights
They make a decision in Christ for a complete about face
No more excuses, no fifty shades of gray
They find the right direction and continue in that way
There is one finish line, two roads to choose
The crown is given to those who run by the rules
