My Experience at Auschwitz-Birkenau

Original Contemporary Poetry by author, Jean Parr

"My experience at Auschwitz-Birkenau"

Dedicated to the 11 million men, women, and children who were murdered in the Holocaust, of which, six million were Jewish.

Also dedicated to one of my favorite authors and Holocaust survivor, Elie Wiesel.
"To forget a Holocaust is to kill twice" ~Elie Wiesel

I will never forget
We were led down the stairs of Block 11, Cell 18, and told, no photos
Only two places in camp were we forbidden; Germany will forever pay its debt
In 2017, they continue to hide behind their woes

Punishment for imagined crimes was decided here
The starvation cell
I was overcome and couldn't hide my tears
This was hell!

I am spiritual, not religious, but I still clasped my hands and closed my eyes
I put my hand on the bars of the cell
I thought to myself, please ease their suffering and I'll commit to teaching against Holocaust deniers and Nazi lies
I wanted to rage, scream, and yell, but trust, most of all, I will tell

I feel ashamed for the human race
Auschwitz-Birkenau left Jews, Poles, Gypsies, and Prisoners of War without even the dignity of recognizing each and every face
