ON NATIVITY'S EVE

Before nativity happened before our wide eyes,
At first we wore no clothes.
Then, we found demons vital
And stored them in our clothes
We put them in our meals
And that was nativity itself
We put them in our farms
We thought they made us strong
We put them in the tinny sticks' houses
We had made for ourselves
To hide our backs from the rain
Or from the scorching sun of Africa
We believed so much in demons
We took pride in them
Though they failed us again and again
Then, the white man brought airplanes
And we still stood to look
With all our boasts in self-made, god-damned, voiceless gods.
