Elder Race

Deep in the darkness of unending night,
Long hidden from mere mortal sight;
Dwell forgotten beings of an elder dawn
Their moment in the sun long since gone.

Hear them chitter and squeak in their ancient tongue
As they writhe like maggots in pestiential dung.
Once they lived under starlit evening sky,
Where fallen and crumbling ruins now lie.

Driven underground by younger blood,
Swept from the land by its cresting flood.
Yet they linger and lurk in fetid cavern and lair;
Pondering their fate with lidless stare.

Perhaps on some distant day they will venture forth once more;
Exrtracting their vengeance in young blood gore.
