CHARACTERISTICS OF A SHUT HEAVEN

Heavens of individuals, families, groups, tribes, tongues, nations, continents, or the world may be shut resulting in certain overbearing conditions.

"If I shut up heaven that there be no rain..." (2 Chronicles 7: 13)

"And thy heaven that is over thy head shall be brass, and the earth that is under thee shall be iron." (Deuteronomy 28: 23).

God obviously carries out a free environmental sanitation for all people's by cleaning up the heavens through rain, and keeps it spiritually open, so that the best of heaven may be conveyed to us. But when the heavens are shut spiritually, it becomes a mere passivity. In worse cases, famines may ensure and the physical rain might be lacking. Who shuts the heaven? God shuts the heaven.

"If I shut up heaven that there be no rain .." (2 Chronicles 7:13).

Though He would always employ and allow at such instance the activities of the devil and demons, He Himself does the shutting. Ignoring God and failing to recognize the dependence of earth on another territory far more superior can have several penal implications. We find Elijah, God's prophets locking the heavens similarly:

"And Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the inhabitants of Gilead, said unto Ahab, As the LORD God of Israel liveth, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word." (I King's 17:1).

How may the heavens be opened?

God lives with the believer in the new testament and does not need to be chased about. But it is true, as the scripture alludes, that God ignored can be too difficult to find. It clearly states that when people consistently and fearlessly resist, oppose and are contrary to Him, He could even "mock when their fears [come]" (Proverbs 1:26), turn His back on them, "despise [them]" (Psalm 73: 20), refuse to answer their prayers (Proverbs 1:28), hand them over to their enemies, make their enemies strong, keep them tormented till they are clean destroyed, make them see no good, or plain ignore them as they ignored Him, for as long as however, till when they would have to recognize their sins and get back to seek him "with all [their] hearts" (Jeremiah 29: 13). Clear cases of Babylonian soldiers becoming as weak as women in a battlefield show that their heavens are shut, and that victory is not merely a result of amassing arsenals. Military confusion and discomfiture despite formidable strength, as in the case of Sisera, (Judges 5: 20) clearly informs of a shut heaven.

God's aim in shutting the heavens, is always to afford men the opportunity to retrace their step. National or cooperate hypocrisy, as is always the case with Nigeria, of "[calling] a solemn assembly" only worsen the situation, because God could be so aggrieved with these repeatedly fictitiously repentant people. Israel had done it in prophet Isaiah's days, and it had no value to them and to God (Isaiah 1: 13). 70 years captivity, deaths, painful and destructive bondages, servitude and decimation always ensued. God requires "repentance...not to be repented from." (2 Corinthians 7: 10).
