Heart Of The Matter

The Chocolate Box

The Chocolate Box

I'm clearing out the attic,
Old relics from the past,
The long forgotten items,
Holding memories meant to last.

And hidden in a corner,
A chocolate box, I spy,
The sunflowers on the cover,
Now dusty, catch my eye.

So long up in the attic,
I wonder why it's there,
I look inside the box now,
The contents now lay bare.

Old letters sent from me to you,
Some tickets for a dance,
The souvenirs of love now gone,
Destroyed by circumstance.

I read the letters one by one,
Did I write those words to you?
I wonder why you kept them,
All tied up in ribbon too.

Some photographs of you and me,
Were we so happy then?
It's strange, I can't remember,
Nine long years? or maybe ten.

I don't recall those feelings,
Well maybe one or two,
Interred now in a chocolate box,
My long lost love for you.
