Rhymes of the Heart

The Legend Of Petit Jean

The King granted a French Nobleman,
Permission to explore a native land.
With a grant to claim a part,
signed by His Noble hand.

He was engaged to marry,
but put their plans on hold.
Until he could return from the new world,
where dangers could unfold.

But she refused his answer,
and disguised as a cabin boy.
So she would be beside him,
on the ship in his employ.

Finally the ship was landed,
on a beautiful spring day.
The Indians came to greet them,
and invited them to stay.

The time had come to return home,
but the cabin boy took ill.
With a sickness they had never seen,
convulsions, and a fever that brought a chill.

Her identity was found out,
she begged him to forgive.
And to carry her back up the mountain,
where her memory would forever live.

The Indians made a stretcher,
that bore her up the mountain side.
And there over looking the river,
at sundown Petit Jean died.

Her love buried her on the mountain,
now her spirit lies within.
And the enchantment of her love story,
brings visitors again and again.

This is the legend of Petit Jean Mountain in Arkansas, a very beautiful place, one of my favorites. That love story is how the mountain was said to have gotten its name. The French Noblemans name was Chavet, and the cabin boy Petit Jean as the sailors called her believing her to be a boy,was named Adrienne Dumont.Petit Jeans grave is there on top of the mountain for all visitors to see.
