Rhymes of the Heart

Friendship Quilt

I inherited an old home place
its beauty caught my eye.
Framed in weeping willows
that seemed to touch the sky.

Every room held such wonder
the craftsmen knew their trade.
From all the hand carved mantles
to the hardwood floors they laid.

I explored each nook and cranny
there was a closet in the back.
Inside an old cedar trunk
the old wood had begun to crack.

I pulled it out into the light
and opened it with care.
Inside was an old handmade quilt,
without a rip or tare.

Its what they call a friendship quilt,
many names were stitched in blue.
But what amazed me most of all
it was dated in 1862.

Could it have been forgotten
this treasure from the past.
I tried to find its owner
And declared It mine at last.

I had it framed upon the wall
In this beautiful old home.
Sometimes I look upon the names
with the feeling I'm not alone.
