Heart Of The Matter

Is There Any Hope?

Now, in my line of work,
You see, I get to meet all kinds,
I'm used to all their foibles,
And the workings of their minds,

They live a very different life,
To such as you and I,
Some happy in their limbo,
As they watch the world, go by,

Some live their lives on benefits,
And Buckfast on the slate,
Deranged by hash and heroin,
And soon, it's all too late,

They're trapped in their addiction,
The dealer's at the door,
Today, they just afford it,
Tomorrow, they need more,

They beg and steel and borrow,
Just to have another fix,
And soon, the wives are working wives,
Who're very good at tricks,

Kids reared by social services,
The lucky ones, in care,
The others left neglected,
And you wonder how they'll fare,

They're dragged up in a lifestyle,
Of alcohol and dope,
And I worry for those children,
Tell me,
Is there any hope?
