Poetic-Verses from ATHANASE

The Day of Purification (Lundi Pur) - (French)

(Kathari Deftera)

to Théo and Anastase Crassas

'All is nothing.'

          St John of the Cross

It's the day of purification, my friends,
it's the Monday when we purify the soul!
The eternal light shining through tears!
The echoes of an immortal beyond!

The house demands to be painted white,
it needs a spring-like purety.
And the heart,
seized by the fulsome tender gleam
of this day,
turns to sapphire!

O Our Lady of the Swallows,
Panaghia Chelidonou,
Our Greek Lady
of perfect Love!

Take away, O Mother,
take away, I beg you,
the thin layer of doubt
that separates my face from God!

Come! Open up your starry cloak,
reconcile the flight of these swallows,
like familiar ancient gods free to fly into the blue,
with the soft pounding of my blood!

It's the day of purification, my friends,
it's the Monday when we purify the soul!

O Our Lady of the Greek Swallows,
Our Lady of divine
Mercy!
