Amazingly, Amazing Grace
Amazing Grace, such Amazing Grace,
When and how and why?
When did I know? How did I hear?
Why did you answer my heartfelt cry?
Amazingly, Amazing Grace,
came and rescued me;
From the gates of hell: I had passed away;
but dead! I couldn't be!
Amazing Grace I soon found out,
could cross the great divide.
It searched my heart and purged my soul,
I had nowhere to hide.
Amazing Grace spoke out to me,
in words quite firm and clear.
"I chose you with all your scars,
there is no need to fear."
Amazing Grace gave hope again,
when I guessed that hope was lost.
I opened my eyes in the treadmill room,
they thought they were seeing a ghost.

Roberts Testimony Below that inspired the write
Poem and testimony shared with permission. May all be blessed and thank-you again my Brother in Christ, Robert.
Hi Linda
Here is how I came to write Amazingly, Amazing Grace.
I had been getting treatment for a stomach complaint that had been troubling
me for about five years.
I organized and ran Farmers Markets and Continental Markets where I
sometimes had to dismantle heavy metal stalls. It was getting increasingly
difficult to cope and I often had to stop because of pains in my chest. I
went to the doctors on several occasions and all that was done was to
increase the medication I was on.
Funnily enough, some of this medication eased the chest pains so no one
thought about a heart problem.
Anyway I was out walking one evening and the pains were so bad I had to be
helped home. I went to the doctors again and he insisted that I went into
hospital for a week of tests. My blood pressure was sky high.
During this week I was quite ill and was given diamorphine intravenously to
quell the pains.
No trace of a heart condition could be found so on the day of my discharge I insisted on having a treadmill test (I call it the dreadmill).
Let me backtrack here for a moment and tell you that I was quite active in
sport being a Rugby Union coach, playing league badminton, playing golf and
going swimming. In other words I was reasonably fit by all accounts.
Back to the treadmill. I was wired up and started walking on the lowest
level, after a couple of minutes the speed was increased and so was the
elevation; it was at this point that the nurse said to come off the
treadmill as the graph was showing I was having serious heart problems.
I sat down on a bed and she began to tell me about what was happening.
I suddenly felt some pains in my chest and felt very dizzy. I said to her,
"I am feeling terrible."
She said, "Ok, I'll give you some of this glyceryl trinitrate spray, that
should help ease the pain."
I said, "Too late." I WAS GONE. My heart stopped and so did
my breathing.
During this time, while, if you like, being separated from my body,
I experienced the most amazing happening.
I was in a place so peaceful and quiet the like of which I had never
experienced in my entire life.
I said, "Well Lord, I've finally bought it, there's no way back from here.
I've really failed you and I've failed my family."
Then a voice said, very clearly, "My ways are not your ways. I have chosen
you with all your faults
I know your faults and you will still have faults but I will help you
overcome them. Now, go back and tell your family and anyone else who will
listen to what you have experienced." I was reminded of that great American
song, "He Touched Me."
I saw no one, I only heard a voice but I knew it was God talking or more
probably Jesus as He makes intercession for us.
The next thing I knew I woke up with about fourteen people round me in this
very small treadmill room. It was very dark and all I saw were black
silhouettes one sitting at the end of where I was lying. I said, "Are you an angel." Back came the reply, "It's the first time I've had anyone call me an
angel but welcome back, we thought we had lost you. Don't do it to us
again."
It made me very much aware of how quickly anyone can be taken, in the
twinkling of an eye.
It also made me realize that we can be a help and blessing to others.
I was given a second chance! However, not everyone is as fortunate as I am.
"Set your mind on things above, not on things of the earth." Col. 3:2
"Do not be overcome with evil, but overcome evil with good." Romans 12:21
This is as I remember it, it may not be exactly as it happened but is as
near accurate as my memory serves me. I can elaborate more but I hope this
is useful to you.
Every blessing
Robert
