one soldier's thoughts

We Carry On

Sweat rolls down our face,
Over our backs and soaks our shirt
Blocking the suns glare with nothing but shades
And the hats on our heads
While sand beats against our face
As the warm wind blows
With weapons slung
We carry on…

Tears of our loved ones still stained
On our uniforms,
We try hard to hang on to their memories
While we concentrate on our mission
But it's hard when we are so far away
Yet with weapons slung
We carry on…

Outside the wire our comrades die
Our vehicles are blown apart like toys
We can do nothing.
But do as we are told,
Knowing that inside we just want to run
Still with weapons slung
We carry on…

Rising before the sun
We put our sneakers on.
No matter the weather, the strings are tied tight
To stay physically fit
While we moan and groan.
Deprived of sleep
Yet with weapons slung
We carry on….

Even though we count the days
We know justice won't be paid
For the years we are gone.
Physically and mentally beat
But we keep our boots in the dirt
And still
With weapons slung
We carry on….

Until the day
We fly back home
To embrace what we've missed so much
We'll fight this war
To the end
No matter what the lose
Because with weapons slung
We will always carry on….
