Heart Of The Matter

The Mistress

Ready and willing,
You wait for his call,
A clandestine meeting,
You're his mistress,
That's all,

The telephone rings,
He can't get away,
His wife needs attention,
“That's Okay”, you say,

But inside you're hurting,
Been let down again,
Tell yourself that he loves you,
Despite all the pain,

You're just second best,
In a game you can't win,
And you wonder out loud,
Just who's living in sin,

You can't see the truth,
So you lie to yourself,
Far better to love,
Than be left on the shelf,

Extinguish the candles,
They've lost their appeal,
And you wonder again,
If his feelings are real,

Make dinner for one,
And turn on the TV,
There's a marriage for two,
But a mistress makes three,

You're trapped in a web,
Of lies and deceit,
You want to escape,
But his loving is sweet,

You lose your resolve,
When he finds time to call,
A clandestine meeting,
You're his mistress,

That's all.
