Heart Of The Matter
Remembrance
I was standing on a dance floor,
Bedecked, red, white and blue,
They called a minute's silence,
We stood, I thought of you,
I bowed my head in silence,
A gesture of respect,
I thought about my Grandad,
Like so many, I suspect,
For he was in the army,
The fourteen, nineteen war,
At seventeen, I wonder,
If he knew what it was for,
Volunteered to do his duty,
To fight for God and King,
And still we fight for freedom,
We haven't learnt a thing,
I was lucky to have known him,
Without him; I wouldn't be,
I like to think he did his part,
To keep our country free.
I bowed my head in silence,
Sent forth a little prayer,
And in a funny kind of way,
I knew, that he was there.
